Antibacterial resistance of community-acquired respiratory tract pathogens recovered from patients in Latin America: results from the PROTEKT surveillance study (1999-2000) BJID
Mendes,C.; Marin,M. E.; Quiñones,F.; Sifuentes-Osornio,J.; Cuilty Siller,C.; Castanheira,M.; Zoccoli,C. M.; López,H.; Súcari,A.; Rossi,F.; Barriga Angulo,G.; Segura,A.J.A.; Starling,C.; Mimica,I.; Felmingham,D..
PROTEKT (Prospective Resistant Organism Tracking and Epidemiology for the Ketolide Telithromycin) is a global surveillance study established in 1999 to monitor antibacterial resistance of respiratory tract organisms. Thirteen centers from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico participat ed during 1999-2000; they collected 1,806 isolates (Streptococcus pneumoniae 518, Haemophilus influenzae 520, Moraxella catarrhalis 140, Staphylococcus aureus 351, S. pyogenes 277). Overall, 218 (42.1%) of the S. pneumoniae isolates had reduced susceptibility to penicillin, 79 (15.3%) were penicillin-resistant and 79 (15.3%) were erythromycin-resistant. Mexico had the highest prevalence of penicillin (76.5%) and erythromycin (31.2%) resistance. Of 77 erythromycin-resistant S....

Evaluation of Medicinal Values of Gymnopetalum chinense (Lour.) Merr., a Lesser Known Cucurbit from Eastern Ghats of India BABT
Kumar,Sanjeet; Das,Gitishree; Shin,Han-Seung; Kumar,Pradeep; Patra,Jayanta Kumar.
ABSTRACT >The in vitro antimicrobial activity of Gymnopetulum chinense (Cucurbitaceae), a lesser known climber of Eastern Ghats and recently recorded species from Odisha, India was studied against five selected human pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, S. pyogenes, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella flexneri and Salmonella typhi), by agar well diffusion (AWD), disc diffusion (DD) and broth dilution methods. Different solvent extracts were prepared from the leaves of G. chinense using various solvents viz. n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, acetone and aqueous. The nomenclature, detailed description and photographs of the plant are provided to facilitate its easy identification. The leaf extract showed presence of phenolic compounds, tannin, saponin,...

Improvement of the indirect hemagglutination test for the detection of antibodies to Streptococcus pyogenes BJMBR
Rubinsky-Elefant,G.; Hoshino-Shimizu,S.; Mamizuka,E.M.; Asciutti,M.M.R..
An indirect hemagglutination test for a seroepidemiological survey of Streptococcus pyogenes infection was standardized. This is an improved modification of the indirect hemagglutination test which utilizes an unstable reagent prepared with fresh blood cells. Two types of bacterial antigens represented by extracellular products and purified streptolysin O were assayed, but only the former antigen gave good results. Pretreatment of the bacterial antigen with 0.15 M NaOH and neutralization to pH 5.5, as well as postfixation of sensitized red cells with 0.1% glutaraldehyde at 56oC for 30 min were found to be essential to give long stability to the reagent in liquid suspension, at least 9 months at 4oC. A total of 564 serum samples with high, moderate and low...

Production of bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) by Streptococcus salivarius strains isolated from the tongue and throat of children with and without sore throat Rev. Microbiol.
Fantinato,Vera; Jorge,A. O. C.; Shimizu,Mário. T..
Streptococcus salivarius strains, isolated from children with and without sore throat, were tested for bacteriocin production against Streptococcus pyogenes. S. salivarius strains producing bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) against S. pyogenes were more frequently found in children without sore throat. These results suggest that these children may be protected against sore throat by the presence of BLIS-positive S. salivarius strains.

Resistencia de Streptococcus pyogenes a los antibióticos: Experiencia de once años en un hospital pediátrico de Buenos Aires ABCL
Lopardo,Horacio A.; Hernández,Claudia; Vidal,Patricia.

Streptococcus pyogenes meningitis in children: report of two cases and literature review BJID
Arnoni,Mariana V.; Berezin,Eitan N.; Sáfadi,Marco A.P.; Almeida,Flávia J.; Lopes,Cláudia R.C..
Streptococcus pyogenes meningitis (SPM) occurs sporadically, even with the increase of invasive streptococcal disease observed in the past years. We reported two cases of SPM in infants to alert pediatricians for the possibility of this agent as a cause of meningitis in previously healthy children.
